We had a great reading session today with lots of fabulous learning going on. There were children reading to teddy bears, some doing word puzzles and others working on letter of the week activities. Many children are making great progress with the Lexia programme on the I Pads and it's awesome to see the motivation around this.

Cupcakes, cupcakes and more cupcakes!
What a fabulous display of amazing cupcakes we had in the hall for our SPCA and Dog Watch fundraiser. We browsed around the stalls and admired the very creative and colourful cupcakes ...it was so difficult to make up our minds about which one to choose!

Fun Friday morning...until an early end to the day!
Well today started off like a normal Friday, but we had a slightly unusual end to our week! Just around lunchtime the water went completely off, which is not very safe or healthy for 250 people! So it meant we had to close the school for the afternoon. While we waited for our adults to come we had some fun relaxing in the room with ipads and quiet activities.
The first half of the day was our normal fun Friday programme. We had a good time at kapahaka - it was our final practice before Tuesday's performance! Remember we are all involved in the Bays Cluster Cultural festival next Tuesday August 25th at 6pm. It is at Sumner School. Girls need to wear a white top and black shorts, boys a black top and black shorts.
We had fun at Jump Jam and a lovely relaxing time in the library today.
We hope you all have a lovely, sunny weekend!

The HVS Music Concert
The musicians in Pikopiko were very busy today! They spent the morning in a technical rehearsal preparing for the concert, then this morning was the first performance for the rest of the school. Wow what a fantastic show! You all played beautifully and should be very proud of yourselves. The ukuleles played (and sang!) 'The Best Day of My Life' and the recorders played 'Be Groovy', 'Hocus Pocus' and 'Joe, Joe'. It is very brave to get up on stage so well done everybody. I can't wait for the evening performance at 6pm tonight, see you all then!
Don't forget tomorrow is a sausage sizzle day for $2 :)

New Poem Verse
On a Wednesday afternoon we are continuing to learn our wonderful shared poem. We are using fantastic expression and awesome actions to make the poem into a full performance for later in the term.
Today we learnt a new verse. Have a practice at home Pikopiko and see if you can learn these latest words off by heart! Try and show your family the actions as well.

The hissing of the frying-pan
The ticking of the grill (tick, tick)
The bubbling of the bathtub (bubble, bubble, bubble)
As it starts to fill
All the musicians in Pikopiko are really looking forward to performing in tomorrow's concert, and everyone else can't wait to watch! Remember it is for all the recorder and ukulele players. There will be a run through for the school at 1.30pm, then the evening concert starts at 6 tomorrow night. Performers need to arrive at 5.45pm, in school uniform.

Old Fashioned Toys!
This afternoon the Pikopiko teachers had some jobs to do so you all got to have a lovely afternoon with Mrs White, Mrs Pearcy and Jo. As part of our Living in the Past topic we had organised an art activity where everybody got a chance to make their own old fashioned coloured spinning wheels! We saw these at Ferrymead so it was great to make our own version. We coloured round cardboard discs and put them on string to spin around. Looks like heaps of fun!

Sunshiney Monday
It was lovely to see the sun today after such a wet weekend. All the Pikopiko children seemed very excited to be able to get out and about again. We had a busy day with all the usual morning programme happenings and then we came together in the afternoon for oral language and topic. We had lots of interesting comments in a discussion about toys. We talked about the differences between toys in the past and our favourite toys and games now. We will be doing some more work in the next week around learning to make movies on the iPads so we can present out learning about Living in the Past.
Our letter of the week is Uu - look out for unicorns, umbrellas and unicycles.
This week the following children will be sharing their prepared talks with the team.

Dogwatch and Discovery
Today we had a special treat at lunchtime. Zack's mum Kelly works down at Dogwatch, and she brought a special furry friend Max along today and spoke to us all about the amazing work Dogwatch do. The Enviro club had invited her, as they are running a cupcake day in a few weeks to raise some money for Dogwatch and the SPCA.
It was great to hear important messages about caring for our dogs, such as making sure they've got food, shelter and water, giving them exercise, keeping them safe and contained at home, and giving them lots of love!! She also reminded us about how important it is to desex dogs so that there are not as many unwanted puppies.
Dogwatch do a fantastic job of taking in dogs and finding them a special forever home. Next time you are looking for a new furry friend make them your first stop!
Check out Dogwatch here!
It was also great to see wee Max who was very cute and very well behaved. He could do lots of tricks too! Like twirling, high fiving, and shaking hands.
Thanks so much Kelly for coming along today :)
Delicious Discovery!
This term as part of our Friday afternoon Discovery programme we are having groups of children involved in food technology sessions. So far the children have made waffles, donuts, stir fry noodles and yesterday it was time to get blender out and learn how to make berrynana smoothies. We measured out milk, added banana, natural yoghurt and frozen boysenberries. Most children thought the smoothies were very good and we had great feedback from the teachers we made one for. The children especially like being able to visit the staffroom for these sessions as they get to sit on the teachers chairs and use their very best manners.
