First of all a special welcome to Ella who had her first meeting with Mr K today and came to visit us in Pikopiko :) It was lovely to meet you Ella! We look forward to you visiting later in the term! Great to see Seth today too, we are excited to have you and Ava join our team next week :)
We managed to squeeze in a running practice after lunch today just before the rain and thunder came! But there were VERY strong winds! We wondered whether they might have made us run faster :) We are crossing our fingers for better weather on Thursday!
Also just a reminder that this Friday is a mufti day and fundraiser for the Nepal earthquake recovery. It is a gold coin donation plus there will be sausages for $2 and juicies for $1.

H for Helicopter and Same or Different?
This week we are focusing on the letter H in Pikopiko. We thought of words like house, hair, Henry, Harry, hen and hippo. For our must do today we all made a paper helicopter. At the end of reading time we headed out to the playground to fly them in the wind!
This afternoon we all got together for a chat to lead into our Kia Kaha unit that Constable Meg is helping us with. We discussed how in some ways we are all the same, and in some ways each of us is different and special. We had a bit of a brainstorm about ways we were the same and different :) Great thinking Pikopiko!

Bikkies + Scooters
It has been birthday time in Pikopiko! A very happy birthday to Lily who turned 6 yesterday, and to Rune who turns 6 tomorrow :) To celebrate Rune brought along some delicious Anzac biscuits for us all to share! Yum! Thanks so much Rune to you and your mum :)
This afternoon we had a special treat at discovery. Lots of children brought along their skates or scooters for some wheels fun outside on the court. You were all so speedy!
Have a wonderful weekend everybody! And a very happy Mother's Day to all the Pikopiko mums :) Don't forget next Thursday is our cross country at 2pm :)

Mr E in Pikopiko
This term at HVS our focus bands on the Tall Learner Rainbow are communication (orange) and motivation (yellow). Mr E told us he had an awesome story to read to us that was all about motivation. He came to Pikopiko after lunch and read us the book 'Two Little Bugs'. What a great story! It was all about being brave and trying your best, and also about encouraging our friends when they might be finding something a bit tricky. Thanks so much Mr E for coming! He also mentioned he might have a few more stories to read us so I'm sure we'll see him again another day :)
This afternoon we had our first session of our new Junior Arts Interchange. Over the next 8 weeks we will be rotating around lessons in Dance, Music, Drama and Gymnastics. We got to do the first two today - we're all excited to try the other two next week! :)

Visit from Constable Meg and Counting Practice
Firstly today a big welcome to Ava who had her first visit in Pikopiko today. It was lovely to have you Ava, we hope you enjoyed your time this morning. We also had Seth for his second visit - great to see you again Seth! Not long now until you both join us full time :)
This afternoon we had a very special visitor come to Pikopiko. Constable Meg came to tell us about being a police officer and show us her uniform - we even got to try on a police hat! She will be helping us out with some lessons on keeping safe over the next couple of weeks.
This afternoon we also had fun learning to count back from 20 with a little song to help us. Check it out below and do some practice at home!
Finally a bit of a shout out - we have had a couple of polar fleeces go missing from Pikopiko, including one that was brand new this term. Please could you double check the name on your fleeces at home to make sure the wrong one hasn't gone home by mistake. Also be sure to always name all clothing!

Cross Country and More Sneeze Safe
Next Thursday May 14th we are holding the Junior Cross Country. We have started training to prepare ourselves! We went for a morning run today to practise our route. We go all the way around the field and have some obstacles along the way. Lots of people managed to go the whole way without stopping!
This afternoon we followed up our learning on Sneeze Safe with a couple of activities to show how easily germs can spread. On the Forest mat we used glitter to show how far bugs can travel - make sure you wash your hands! On the Ocean mat they used a spray bottle to show where a sneeze can end up if you don't trap it with your hands or a tissue. Yuck!

Island Theme and Ronald McDonald
Today we had a special day at HVS. We all came to school in mufti and dressed in an Island theme :) Amalia in Pikopiko with her big buddy Sophia planned this day to raise money to help some kindergartens in Vanuatu. They need money and resources after the big cyclone that happened there recently. The girls did a fabulous job and the school raised more than $400! Three big tubs of resources were donated as well.
We also had a surprise visitor to the Junior School today! Ronald McDonald came along to see us and teach us about road safety. He told us a funny story about his lost sock! We now know to Stop, Look and Listen before we cross the road. We also know to Make it Click when we hop in a car - you can see us singing below :)
Finally we had our Tall Learner assembly today so a huge congratulations to our three Pikopiko Tall Learners this week. Well done to Rune for your award for your awesome motivated learning. Great work William for your amazing communication skills, and also to Yasmin who is becoming such a confident speaker.
Have a great weekend!
